I am very proud to be working in association with Sims IVF in Dublin. Together with Kate Curtis, Midwife and Acupuncturist, I provide acupuncture to patients in-house at Sims state of the art clinic in Dublin, making it possible to schedule treatments on the same day as scans, blood tests and procedures.
The reason for acupuncture’s enduring popularity among those undergoing IVF is the deep relaxation that it provides, without the worry of side-effects. Patients can experience a great deal of anxiety when they encounter fertility problems – acupuncture can help to alleviate that. Patients report better stress levels, improved sleep, better tolerance of IVF drugs and more energy from using acupuncture.
Research shows that acupuncture not only decreases cortisol levels (the stress hormone) but that it also has a positive influence on the arterial blood flow to the uterus. Acupuncture has been shown to improve endometrial receptivity, egg production and FSH levels. Studies have been produced that show higher clinical pregnancy rates in those who used acupuncture before and after embryo transfer. The British Acupuncture Council provide an excellent review of the research on their website, here.
We take a holistic approach, because every patient is different and therefore faces different challenges to getting pregnant. Roughly 20% of infertility cases are diagnosed as unknown cause, that is a significant number. I firmly believe stress and the influence stress has on the endocrine system must account for a great number of these cases.
We provide acupuncture at all stages of the IVF course and offer treatment on the day of embryo transfer. The appointments take place at Sims Clinic, Clonskeagh Road, Dublin 14 and take one hour.
I see patients of all other IVF clinics in Dublin Holistic Centre, Dublin 2 and Merrion Gates Medical Centre, Dublin 4.
